The design for this bold rug was conceived by architect and textile and furniture designer Alexander Girard, who is known for his work with Charles and Ray Eames and other mid-century figures. Designed in 1960, the rug’s fabric—a 100% cotton flatweave—is manufactured by Maharam, a company founded in Chicago in 1902 by Russian immigrant Louis Maharam. This rug is woven by highly skilled, independent artisans through an environmentally and socially responsible resource in India. Both Maharam and Alexander Girard have work in MoMA’s collection. An icon of mid-century design, the Maharam Alexander Girard Cotton Plus Rug will make an impressive statement in your home.
