The Rado True Square Watch was first introduced in the 1990s and to this day, each style is made from a material that the brand is known for: ultra-light and durable high-tech ceramic which makes the watch extremely comfortable. These new versions represent a different designer’s interpretation of the Rado True Square Watch.
The design from Formafantasma, an award-winning Italian duo, is a modern take on closed-cover pocket watches. The watch features a small window on the front of the case so the time can be viewed without opening it. The idea of “looking back as a way of looking forward” is a common theme in Formafantasma’s work, some of which can be found in MoMA’s collection.
Sci-fi films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Bladerunner and Moon inspired Tej Chauhan’s retro-futuristic design. The watch’s face features an intricate display of silver concentric circles and indexes, and a small window fitted with a date indicator that features a custom-designed font. Chauhan trades in Rado’s traditional ceramic strap for a quilted leather one that has a pillow-like surface which imitates watch links.
YOY, a Japanese duo, paired a digital display with mechanical movements for their Undigital design. Inspired by a 1980s futuristic vibe, the watch features angular bars that are used in conjunction with the digital display. Luminous white Super-LuminNova stands out on the matte black dial during both the day and night.
All of these Rado True Watches are water-resistant and have a sapphire crystal and automatic movement.
